the answer to this has changed over time. initially, HT was supposed to be a test run for the fic i really wanted to write (but HT has long since eclipsed it in passion). still, a few months into writing HT i had grown so weary of the effort that i was genuinely uncertain i could bear to write another dronefic.

but alas, at this point there’s an undeniable answer to this question, and it’s that i don’t think i could stop writing dronefic if i tried.

right now, i have a 35k word complete rough draft for another fic, and i have 20‍-​30k words of notes and outlines for a rather ambitious AU, and if i added in what i just spent this evening writing it’d be even more embarrassing

i do want to shift my focus back to original writing, but it’s tempting to stay focused on the fandom when it’s the first place where people read my writing

as far as plans go, i plan to finish Hostile Takeover, and that’s it. i don’t know what i’m going to do with Corrupt Combustion or An Opaque Heart. i guess the simplest way to put it is i don’t want to write any more fics, but chances are more fics will want to be written

There is something else you could share about the Corrupt Combustion? Or that story about Cyn and Uzi? I am oh so curious about them after the emotional devastation of An Opaque Heart!

fun fact: Corrupt Combustion is worse. or at least it might be; after writing AOH, i started wondering whether i really should write something even more bleak

but yeah, Corrupt Combustion is the story about Cyn and Uzi. or was, rather. it begin mutating when i made the connection that Cyn being stuck inside of Uzi, occasionally possessing her, kind of resembled a common trope of demons sealed in the protagonist you see in a bunch of anime. i kept thinking along these lines, and whoops, this AU is whole ass Jujutsu Kaisen fusion now.

(i recently read back over my original outline for Circuits Turn to Stone, the original Uzi & Cyn fic, and i don’t think it works as well with how much everything else has changed. i’m not sure if i’ll scrap it entirely, or rewrite it into a different story where Cyn’s influence drags Uzi into darkness, more of a horror/thriller with less fantastical action and complex mechanics. there’s a certain appeal to that, but i worry the stories are too similar, even as i rethink how CC should ultimately play out)

but enough waffling. what is Corrupt Combustion? you don’t actually need to know anything about JJK to understand it, i think.

Corrupt Combustion

the notes for this have been semi‍-​public for months now, but i’ve been dragging my feet in pointing people at it since i’m still unsure what i’m gonna do with it.

it’s also a little bit disorganized. a general overview of the mechanics is in this post:

this “prologue” is the newest thing i’ve written, it’s supposed to serve as a introduction to the plot

Deadlocked & Thrashing is technically the first thing i’ve written, and it was supposed to be a sort of prequel fic that sets up the events of the main plot, but it’s gotten so complicated that i think Beau might’ve become the real protagonist?

finally, the last post chronologically speaking is the backstory for Doll’s dad, and i think it’s probably the write up i’m proudest of.

one thing you may be thinking if you read all of that… where the heck is Uzi?

and i do have plans for her, big plans, but i’m keeping those cards close to my chest for now >:3

Just finished reading your corrupt combustion notes and damn you cooked up another fucking banger!

Some of my favorite parts are J’s powers (of course), Nori’s whole vibe, the way you shine the spotlight on Beau, which I love that they’re kind of the main character here, with Cyn infesting them.

There’s also all the mysteries, like who’s giving the orders, what’s the solver’s final goal, how different is the solver from Cyn, and Nori’s whole backstory. I especially got caught on both Doll and Uzi ‍-​ they’re getting along! Go them! But also the mystery of what they’re up to, and how it ends up. I wonder how many plot beats will come from JJK, how many from MD, and how many will you make yourself.

Speaking of Doll, I love what you did with Adam ‍-​ a tragic tale of losing yourself, and even when given the chance to turn away you don’t. Girl is probably gonna be devastated.

Not gonna lie, some of the parts of all your outlines feel like good enough writing to just put on AO3. Can’t wait to see what you do next, whether or not it involves Murder Drones!

there’s quite a few plotlines i’m itching to do write ups for. i’m very proud of what i have in store for j and uzi. and that’s without getting into my thoughts on v & lizzy, or what i have planned for alice.

but most of all, nobody is prepared for the “pilot”‍ ‍‍—‍ which at this point, is such a byzantine clusterfuck the relation to episode one is in the manner of the ship of theseus

the problem with posting these outlines is that i get caught in a paradoxical spiral. if it’s good enough to post, then it’s good enough to polish. and the trouble with polishing, is that if i’m gonna sit down and check for typos, i might as well tighten up the wording here and there. if i’m gonna tighten up the wording, i might as well add a few more details for clarity and impact. if i’m adding details, well it’s kinda jarring if the fidelity is inconsistent, might as well flesh out the sparser sections too. if i turn this summary into a mini scene, i can add this cool character beat or i can foreshadow this plot point. and you know, if i reimagine this bit entirely, couldn’t i make it more dramatic, more inspired? if i can make it a little bit better, why not take it just one step further?

which all then just snaps back to “if i’m gonna post it, i might as well draw the rest of the owl” and it’s just. i don't know that's scary.png

I was thinking about CC again, and realized something very interesting ‍-​ Uzi, at the start of MD, doesn’t have solver powers. In terms of CC, it means she hasn’t undergone combustion. But given the nature of her parent’s work, she probably knows about how zombie drones work.

which leads to another interesting tech thing, if she tries to hunt zombies pre‍-​combustion ‍-​ she has to figure out how to detect them, which could come in a manner of ways, but would no doubt be something JCJ would want a look at. Avatar

one thing that didn’t make it into the outlines yet but i’ve been tossing around, is that instead of opening immediately on “nori’s average tuesday”, the very beginning of the fic is highly edited and redacted version of the “dead drones explode” exposition

then it scene breaks to uzi & doll giving a group presentation to the class. “And what have our parents done for the past forever while the world’s in a frickin zombie apocalypse? Hide our powers behind this lame as hell masquerade? Anyway, that’s why my project is this totally game‍-​changing error blaster!”

still workshopping the name, but the idea is it’s a gun that harnesses corruption to allow ordinary drones to damage zombie processes.

(thinking when i flush out uzi & doll’s first excursion, uzi might be still trying to find a source of corruption for the error blaster. doll ignites her core in the fight with the zombie, and that might be what lets her use the error blaster where uzi couldn’t)

that said, right now the notes are written as though solvers with unignited cores can still perceive corruption. (an easy to miss detail, but when doll & adam encounter the zombie, doll reacts and adam can’t perceive it).

(alice, though, does need a way to detect zombies. i was going to give her glasses, but a friend suggest perhaps this is what her antlers are for. like radio antennae)

anyway, i think it’s more interesting if pre‍-​ignition drones need a workaround to detect them, but it does present difficulties for the planned plot. because one of the major sources of tension is that even when the action is in full swing, no matter how many times uzi steps into the line of fire, she doesn’t initialize a core driver.

oh yeah i forgot to post this here, but after eight months i finally wrote another chapter of Aurora Moonrise. (the ‘what if comets were inhuman spirits’ fic i talk about sometimes). this chapter required writing a common trope and couldn’t figure out how to handle it in a way i liked

and then it rained heavily with ear splitting thunder which turned out to be exactly the inspiration i needed.

5: Flash iv: To Drown With a Smile

mixed feelings about this WIP, so writing more of it isn’t a priority, but it’s refreshing to go back to something i can write a whole chapter of in a day and be done with. (next HT chapter is already three times and long and not even halfway done 💀)

i’m not saying i’m gonna write the sequel to An Opaque Heart but god, how do i keep coming up with ways to make their lives even worse

probably the only reason i’m not actually rotating a black nerve drones fic in my head is that i’m not sure what point i could make with it, and black nerve doesn’t actually have iconic characters who could bounce off of copper‍-​9 in an interesting way.
