one of the odder hang-ups i have is that for me, porn can be plenty fun and interesting — except when it’s porn of characters i’m invested in. then in my standards skyrocket. even phenomenally well-executed pieced can leave me feel vaguely discomfitted, when i’d be all over it if i didn’t simply recognize the character. (the worst is when i don’t recognize the character, love the piece, then come back after getting into their source material and now the art’s kinda soured)
and then it hit me: i’m projecting. i’m somewhere on the ace spectrum; i don’t want to have sex, i don’t look at people or character designs and go “i want to fuck that” (though it’s a sentiment i’ve learned to parrot, chinese room style, mostly as a show-don’t-tell way to express “i think this is neat and visually appealing”). the prospect of actually enacting a sexuality mostly arouses disinterest
so if a character shows up in porn, i can take them on those terms, suspend my disbelief. but if i already know the character, if i relate to them, if they make sense to me… well, the thing that makes the most sense to me is not being all that interested in sex
so suddenly their appearance in porn almost feels coercive, their character mutated and misinterpreted in service of what the artist or audience wants rather than the character themselves.
it’s as if everyone to me is ace unless otherwise specified, and given how puritan culture is, many characters and writers deftly dodge ever broaching the topic of what the character is into.
anyway, this is all a bit silly, i realize, because now that i’ve actually articulated it, of course most characters are probably not ace, and it’s not really that weird to imagine them in sexual situations, because they would in fact have sexualities.
a corollary of this is that i would be — and i am — much more amenable to porn if the legwork is put in the justify how the sexual scenario flows out from the established characterization. but most erotic artists just sort of take it for granted, and i don’t find sex appealing enough to relate, nor distracting enough to look past it
(makes for an interesting lemma in service of the ‘ace write the best porn’ theorem — the results will wind up more convincing if the author needs to be convinced)

the thing is, i write heavily visual prose with a pretty weak sense of visualization, because the visuals do matter. not because of what they look like, but because of what they evoke emotionally, what they imply subtextually.
films aren’t just spectacle! if there’s a movie playing out in your head, a good one, then there’s narrative meaning to the lighting, the set design, the color choices, where the camera lingers and cuts.
you can achieve fantastic interiority by externalizing it, so imo if detail-oriented prose isn’t working, it’s because either the author or the reader isn’t thinking about how those details feel and what they mean

pretty good breakdown of what we see in the show
on the linux command line, there are programs everyone uses and their interfaces have been largely unchanged for fifty years. they mostly accept input in terms of line-separate text. these days we have better, more flexible formats that more accurately reflect how data is processed and used (e.g., JSON), but in a lot of scripts you can find yourself twisting data to comply with a format that suits these ancient programs — you can count on them being there and working in every server, they’re reliable like that
i wouldn’t think of the AS as an 3d modelling program per se. to me what would make a lot of sense is if the 3d modelling command suite was one of the first programs humans wrote to exploit the AS’s capacity for manipulating matter. translate, scale, rotate, edit isn’t native to the AS and doesn’t reflect how it works, any more than the “file, edit, view, help” menu you see at the top of a program window is an operating system fundamental. it’s a high-level interface for your benefit.
the reason it’s operated with drone’s hands is because humans like to operate things with their hands. maybe technically, if you rebuilt everything from the ground up, you could have a different set of commands, a different interface, just like you could have an OS other than wdOS running on the same hardware.
but this is something i tend to change the details of depending on the AU i’m working on, and honestly i diverge from canon pretty dramatically, mostly because the solver is an excuse to indulge my two passions: technical minutia and magic system worldbuilding.

emotions are powerful. in fantasy, this is taken for granted more commonly than it’s justified. monsters feed on emotions, spells are fueled by emotion. why? how?
the unit of energy is the calorie; it’s in food, it’s in fuel. brains consume calories, they don’t produce it. yet in these worlds, a brain experiencing a powerful surge of emotion becomes an energy source able to do work.
does that make any sense?
here’s a possible explanation. it’s signalling. why do we blush and cry and contort our faces? to communicate. we do it involuntarily, our bodies response to our emotions. it’s not easy to hide emotional reactions, which makes it meaningful signal.
we can imagine a magical process (a passive spell, if you will) innate to the brain that produces waves of magical energy in accordance to mood. the output of the spell depends on the brainstate, such that it’s intractable to output anger-waves without any genuine frustration. just as innate to the brain is a (subconscious) sensitivity to the output of other brains. humans in this setting are generally born empaths.
if humans evolve to power energy into this spell, it becomes an meaningful signal of emotional intensity — you aren’t going to waste energy on a fleeting impulse. it could be a locus of sexual selection — the ability to pour energy into emotion-waves indicates being healthy and well-fed, on top of the actual info about your personality it conveys.
i can think of three ways it would make sense for such large amounts of energy to go into adaptations like this. the first is that it isn’t actually a waste of energy. you aren’t turning the food you eat into emotional emissions. rather, humans have souls of some sort with pools of mana of some sort. mana-calories aren’t easily digested into a form useful to the body, so venting them for social purposes doesn’t have much of a cost.
the second is that humans evolved in a very low trust environment where they needed stronger signals than facial expressions and body language, and even existing social rituals weren’t enough — a world with changelings and shapeshifters, perhaps, fain to deceive and manipulate humans.
this circles back to our premise in an oddly iatrogenic way. if there are monsters that feed on human emotions, and thus humans grow more sensitive and loud with their emotional broadcast, that will help them rat out those who fail to properly imitate humans, selecting for better imposters who have more emotional energy to feast on. a cure that brings the disease back twice as strong.
the third possibility is that humans didn’t evolve to do this at all. rather, humans were infected with a kind of parasite of the soul. the energy stems from metabolizing that spiritual tissue, and it’s vented out as sexual signalling, but not human sexuality — it’s parasite pheromones that let them find other hosts they might breed with. parasitic mind-control is a classic, so you can imagine that the parasite might make its host trust other hosts and be suspicious and uncomfortable around healthy humans.
it’s not unheard for parasites to evolve to mutualism, and it’s easy to imagine how humans might get social benefits from symbiotic signalling, so you can work out how it’d evolve to look more like the situations described in the prior hypotheticals. what’s neat about this approach is that because it’s a symbiont rather than a feature of humanity, you don’t have to think quite as hard about how many things would be different if we all had innate psychic powers
finally, one interesting knock-on effect of sketching out a world where emotions generate so much energy is that there can’t be enough energy vampires or changelings to slurp up everything that wafts off a human (the point of these things is that they’re rare and dangerous), but you should totally expect there to be something in the niche created by all the free food
i’m imagining tiny incorporeal creatures like spiritual plankton, perhaps faintly visible as a crown or aurora around the human head, drooping and fading while a human is calm and resting, yet becoming bright and animated when they get exciting. you might be imagining the spren from stormlight archives, but what i’m thinking is a world where emmanata are diegetic

what sucks about editing is the fact that you can read back over something and it’s like. this needs work and half of it is stuff you can easily write a better version of on the spot. and half of it is just painful to read but it’s more painful to try and think of a better way to do it

There’s a whole media ecosystem, and I think one of the things that people don’t appreciate is the extent to which something living in that ecosystem can benefit works which aren’t really related.
A book where the hero dies horribly at the end is good for books where the heroes triumph at the last moment, because that subversion adds an element of suspense that otherwise wouldn’t be there.
If there’s a notable example of a bad ending, of genres switching halfway through, of subverted expectations, failed gambits, platonic friendships that stay platonic, then everything that plays it straight benefits. You can no longer be sure which way the author is going to go.
In my opinion, the tropes are the tropes for a reason, and the reason they show up is that they’re satisfying and generally follow good principles of writing (though they’re often executed poorly). But the patterns get better to read when we know that we might swerve sideways at any moment, and that’s one of the reasons I think people should write unmarketable books that people will hate, just so we don’t have a monoculture.
I think writing a book that switches genres two thirds of the way through is a terrible idea, but it’s a terrible idea that I think someone should do
i wouldn’t be so quick to assume this a good thing.
a memorable discourse i remember seeing on your discord server is an old regular contending that there’s a cost to reading trash, that if you read too many terrible stories, it infects your pattern matching until your judgments about where a story’s going, what it means & whether it’s worth reading is tainted by the accidental resemblance to the habits of slops & hacks
the double edge to a recklessly unorthodox story increasing surprise is that it also decreases trust
this is something i feel acutely when reading & writing fanfiction and webfiction. that’s an ecosystem so full of people who don’t know what they’re doing such that the savvy readers — the ones you want — are going to need pretty clear upfront indication that a story is competent.
a world with more stories that shift genres, that have rocks fall everyone dies endings, that subvert tropes that work for a reason, is a world where whenever you see a good story do something weird, a chunk of the audience is going to sigh, go “oh no, are they really gonna…?” and some of them are going to bail
(funnily enough, one of i ever wrote as a teenager was actually about entropy and the population dynamics of these competing strategies in the context of rational fiction, and i singled out the dilemma of “this doesn’t make sense” being an intentional hint that something else going on versus just being the author’s mistake)
but i digress. i do agree that the effect you describe exists and it fun to be kept guessing. (though these days i’m increasingly skeptical of the persistent assumption of the importance that stories be surprising and unpredictable).
i’m not sure it’s possible to say which effect is stronger and whether it’d add up to a net positive or net negative. it depends, no doubt, and hits different in different genres and media

i’m not a fan of xenofiction — a funny thing to say when my writing has focused on nonhuman main characters with hardly any exceptions — but xenofiction isn’t about aliens, just like how mystery stories aren’t about mysteries.
mystery stories are about resolving mysteries, and xenofiction is about contrasting and comprehending alien characters within a human perspective.
if you’re writing a mystery, it’s simply logical to have a detective character, it emerges naturally from the form of what you’re trying to accomplish, and if you’re writing xenofiction, humans are conducive to placing a finer point on alienness. it’s simply logical
