- sad i didn’t stick with the 2025 revival of black nerve, that concept for smoothly letting characters state their pronouns without sounding out of place in a fantasy setting was a good one

- the reason editing is so hard for me is because i ask myself, is this fire because snugglesquiggle wrote it, or did snugglesquiggle write this because it is fire? this question haunts me always
- if had the answer i could figure everything else out
to clarify what this means, the serious articulation of the mystery here is that i often sit down to edit something hoping to improve it but decide that what i originally wrote works just fine.
but why? am i concluding that writing is acceptable because it’s my own and i cannot judge impartially (it’s fire because i wrote it), or is did i write something acceptable and i’m simply observing that fact (i wrote it because it’s fire).
concisely, is the authorship or the quality the most important factor in my critical analysis?
not knowing the answer to this question has destroyed my ability to write over the past year or two. the advice everyone gives writers is that you can’t let perfectionism paralyze you, getting anything done is better than getting nothing done, you have to make it first then you can make it good later
but when was the last time i “made it good later”? fact of the matter is i rarely edit my first drafts in any substantial sense. it amounts to so much copy editing and proofreading. this does not accord with the importance everyone places on editing.
if i can’t rely on an editing pass to catch structural problems, then i need to have the right structure before i start writing. if i relax or hold myself to a lower standard, then it’s impossible for me to tell if i’m simply doing everything right or unable to tell when i make mistakes

- perfect is the enemy of good doesn’t just apply to writers, it can get you as a reader too. there are some fandoms where i never end up reading because i’ll first remember “oh that’s right, i like that fandom” and go searching, then remember “but wait, there’s this one thing i really like” and then i can’t find anything with that specific character/situation and settling for anything else just sours me on the whole endeavor

in the shower i was thinking more about a plot idea i’ve been sitting on for a few weeks
where i’m thinking the setup is the juzi divorce goes disastrous and after a few years of trying to survive on her own uzi says fuck it all and turns herself off
not a suicide, because she sets it up carefully to not be permanent, and she’s figuring that if anyone actually needs her they’ll find her and turn her back on
think ‘would any of my friends notice if i stopped posting sad_and_with_bindle.jpg’ times a million
anyway so then the fic could open on punished emily (hi opaque heart) booting her up and going hey bitch cyn’s here and the world’s ending next week, we gotta get to work
but my immediate next thought was ‘wait no, would uzi really be that straightforward about it’
so now i’m imagining what if mfers have to do a whole ARG scavenger hunt just to find the clues to turn her back on

- weird idea: inflation kink by way of a bug that can do spider-style external digestion, but instead evolved to (need to) preserve prey on much longer time scales, so instead of enzymes for digesting prey it instead preserves the meat in proteins that expand into a jelly-like substance that pervades and encases the prey, perhaps with a separate injection for actual digestion

- hi, your website page about anatomically correct bugfucking came up on my google search of “mantis genitalia” and it completely made my day. i’ve had to do awkward research in the past to figure out how frogs fuck, guiltily sifting through scientific diagrams and webpages by people who are most definitely not furries, and i thought i would have to do the same for mantises/other insects. thank you so much for pioneering the field of anatomically accurate bugfucking. i’m admittedly not very knowledgable about insects so having extremely niche information presented in plain english is a huge help. have an amazing day.

- when your friend reblogs “the world needs [fanfic trope your WIP has]” but you don’t want to lose motivation by talking about it so you sit on your hands and smile
- this meme is always so strange to me. writing is communication. i’m not sure what’s worse, the idea that some people are holding themselves back from enriching and iterating on their ideas out of some superstition about dopamine, or that this is genuinely just how motivation works for some people not sure if it’s an overstated piece of just-so psychology, or this is a case of that SSCism about how every piece of advice needs an equal and opposite piece of anti-advice
- azdoine reblogged
I mean it’s not a meme, it’s not something I justify with a pop science fear of running out of dopamine, it’s just my experience that when I spend too much time talking about my WIPs in detail instead of writing them, my outlines never get instantiated. I’m sure my writing would be 100x better if I was regularly bouncing off of a beta or a rubber duck, but that’s not my priority while my discipline is already shot
Like, uh, I’m sorry I’m living a life you can pattern match to cringe superstition and self-repression? That must be rough

“hey squiggle, why dont you write stories in any of the new settings you’ve been cooking up” because i haven’t yet worked out enough worldbuilding to comfortably render scenes — what if there’s a whole dimension of daily life and common knowledge i didn’t account for?
“what about black nerve, haven’t you done a ton of worldbuilding for that one” because there’s too much worked out to comfortably render scenes — what if there’s a dimension of established fact i forgot to account for?
