Writer Wrap‍-Up i got tagged by @firebatvillain in this post
How many fics did you write this year?

i published just one fic on ao3: Lucid Hours, Inverted Nightmares

but on my site for this year, there’s about 20‍-30 posts which run the full gamut between purely informational (my post explaining the html needed to create footnotes on ao3) to just fictional exposition (several write‍-ups about my lore or planned plots) to drafty sketches of proper stories.

so it’s difficult to tally them up. six of these are one‍-shots focusing my OTP, J/Uzi, which i would say easily count.

another is an short story and tech demo (), another is a “pilot chapter” for a WIP i didn’t end up doing further work on (Ars Longa), both of which i would be proud to count as fics.

and i think that’s the rubric i’ll stick to. if someone said “show me a fic you’ve written”, i would be more comfortable showing them a snippet like “Headpat Techniques” rather than to the blogpost “Top Secret Mom Lore”

in short: maybe 9+, varying with your definition

How many words did you write this year?

difficult to say for the above reasons. a quick command line to count the words of my published posts gives a number like 114k, but that includes essays, and it doesn’t include anything i wrote on tumblr, which definitely amounts to several thousands words at the least‍ ‍‍—‍ in particular, i wrote this lacenet microfic, which wound up fairly popular.

in fact, that might be worth counting as a fic in the previous answer… but where does that end? does this two paragraph meditation on ship dynamics count as a fic? (oh no, i just realized how many longform horny posts i wrote and forgot about… maybe i should redo the count entirely…)

(and that’s not even getting into all of the drafts i’ve generated in the background without showing anyone…)

Did you try anything new this year? (new fandom? new pairing? new language?)

i gave the most minute dabbling in writing Silksong and Feng Shui Engineering fics, but i think if i would point to one thing as new, it was my experiments in interactive storytelling. ergodic literature, if you will.

WMAC required the users to click a bunch read it in full, offering a nonlinear experience depending on how you go about it, but my most ambitious experiment was one almost no one actually got to see

i’d spent a month last year working on a script for creating VN‍-like branching fics using the tools Ao3 offers, and it worked, but it proved so computationally intensive that i lost steam working on the flagship fic meant to demonstrate the tech ‍- even a simple dialogue tree took many minutes to compile if it was a few branches down

Did you participate in any fests/events during the year?

none, though i gazed longingly at ratficfest

Which is the funniest fic you have written this year?

it might be that untitled lacenet snippet, has a lot of banter wherein lace completely fails to ragebait hornet. though the runner‍-up might be the oneshot titled , which exists entirely to build to a groan‍-worthy punchline

Which is the angstiest fic you have written this year?

a tie between Lucid Hours… and the fic i shadowdropped on my site at the very end of the year, . the former starts with the premise of an Uzi that has fully embraced life as a murder‍-cannibal working for the bad guys, the latter is an Uzi who is taking her first steps down that path

Which is the steamiest fic you have written this year?

might be Lucid Hours… again, if robots making out and licking each other’s featureless crotches is your idea of steamy. i certainly think it’s my most intimate.

but i did write my first and so far only piece of fiction that mentions actual genitalia and climax last year… , which is a second person description of getting off on precipitation. is that more or less steamy?

Which is your most valuable writing lesson learned this year?

2025 was an abysmal year for my productivity compared to what i accomplished even a year before. the easiest culprit to blame would be to sum up that entire misery vortex as a keen demonstration of how important it is for me to have someone actively reading and engaging with what i write. to be clear, people do read my stuff, but 2025 was definitely when i felt the most unheard i had in a while, mainly owing to a few people i relied on for feedback drifting away or becoming busy with important life matters

but in spite of this, i did have flashes of passion in the dark, so that can’t be the whole story. so i’d say another thing illustrated last year was that i just can’t sustain the same flurries of productivity i once did. it’s not hard to trace a repeated pattern of partial recovery followed by me trying to crank out many thousands of words a day and promptly burning out again

so i am making some attempt to pace myself this year. so far i’ve been plugging away at writing a lil bit more than five hundred words each morning and taking a break, and it’s going smoothly so far

What do you look forward to writing next year?

those who pay keen attention to my blog (or have caught me rambling on certain discords) have probably noticed me muttering about a race of parasitic bugs. i have a few ideas for stories to tell in this setting and lot of worldbuilding taking shape in my notes. i’m hopeful that in the coming months it’ll take come together as something i could proudly show off to people, but we’ll have to see

another thing i’ve encountered, reading about mosquitos, is the concept of a peritrophic matrix. which is that some insects secrete a semi‍-chitinous film in their stomach after they eat something and only the digestible bits filter out of the matrix. indigestible bits and pathogens and toxins get stuck inside, so it’s more streamlined and secure

i’m in communities with people who are somewhat thoughtful yet also fond of guilty pleasure like isekai and fantasy world with video game powers and the general mold of shounen level up magic systems.

this means endless litigation and handwringing about what constitutes “slop” or “popcorn fiction”. one of the central promises of these genres is that they go down easy, give you a drip feed of pleasure without much complication

and on occasion i’ve checked out these stories, and found them boring and outright intolerable to read. to be clear, i take no issue with the concept‍ ‍‍—‍ i’ve read millions of words of naruto fanfiction where characters become mass murdering ninja while still in elementary school. i’ve endured downright dreadful prose while digging deep in the yuri mines.

¶   I think saying humans need “hope” or “courage” is true in this the same (or similar) way that “blue things are blue” is true. It is, but it assumes the conclusion. They are all blue, but they’re all blue in different ways. (And different cultures may not even agree that they’re all “blue”.) (edited)

which is the basis for this theory: the radiance isn’t a moth. if she even held that form outside of dreams, it was akin to pale king’s transformation, an affection simply for the sake of appealing to and manipulating her followers

then you have the one step savvy troll that notices assholes get punished, so they’re careful to never break any rules, but still go as far as they can in that domain of deniability.

but this is old news, the concept of the line‍-toeing troll so widespread everyone recognizes it

i was writing a sentence earlier today, and realized a description i was writing could best be described as, for lack of an existing term, post‍-literal

i tried explaining this to a chatroom but i’m not sure if anyone understood me. it doesn’t help that the sentence in question was not actually an example of the phenomena

the basic dynamic here is like, so you have plain literalism, right. you say “the car is red,” because it’s literally red.

and then you have figurativism. “the car has a red‍-hot paintjob.” this is evocative, but not truly as described

and then you have emphatic literalism. “the car was literally red‍-hot.” this clarifies that what you might otherwise think is figurative is exactly as described

now, the thing i stumbled across what a case where like… i wanted to convey that same emphatic sense of “and i mean that literally!”

but the thing that’s literal is… itself a metaphor?

so, it’s a comparison that’s almost parasitic on an known, established comparison

still probably hard to parse what i mean, so i guess i can explain what i thought was an instance of this before i checked the etymology

“glare” as a word originally referred to harsh light, and later became used to refer to fierce looks. but at this point, i think it’s reasonable to be more familiar with its use to refer to rudely staring at someone ‍- some dictionaries even list that definition first!

this means that, like me, you may intuitively think up a false etymology, and assume that e.g. “the sun’s glare” is just a common figure of speech where daylight is imagined to be the sun giving you a mean look

so, pretend for a moment that’s actually true. i wrote:

My brain was burning with that liquid light. My glare had been famous, but on the days I drank my prescription, it took after the sun’s‍ ‍‍—‍ [literally].

i put it in brackets because i wanted to figure out a better way to express myself

now, in reality, it turns out that “literally” is in fact fairly apropos here

but if we’re pretending glare primarily refers to the expression, then something kinda interesting would be happening in this sentence

because the power of the image comes specifically from associating it with a different metaphor!

so the analogy “the sun’s light is like a glare” becomes a lemma for “my glare is like the sun’s glare (which is not in fact a glare at all)”

but alas, that’s not actually what’s happening here

and i struggled to think of real instance of this happening…

it’s a struggle reading or writing in a niche that’s adjacent to a kink if the worldbuilding is much more important to you than pandering to the kink

because even if there’s people writing ostensibly related stuff to enjoy or take inspiration from, a lot of them will just not be doing the same grappling with the justifying assumptions, let alone making interesting tradeoffs for realism instead of erotic appeal

for a tame example you have stuff like mind control or transformation, where i’m sure it’s very exciting for this to be some overwhelming magical effect you’re powerless against‍ ‍‍—‍ but to me that sucks and i think it’s much more interesting if it’s limited and messy

similarly, when you have killers and cannibals or others taboo acts, if it’s eroticized then this means that you’ll mostly get one‍-shots or long‍-form stories that warp the logic of the world in favor of the perpetrator, sucking all of the tension out of the story as they always get away without consequences

2026‍-01‍-07

there’s something acute about realizing just how much of a failure you are. this may sound melodramatic or ridiculous from someone whom people look up to, with achievements and success that so many people would be and probably are envious of.

but that makes it worse, to me? i have the potential, i’ve proven myself, but i still can’t hack it

got tagged by @firebatvillain in this post‍ ‍‍—‍ that’s right, this has been in my draft for a year!
How many works do you have on AO3?
Six Seven, but there’s several on my site I probably ought to publish already.
What’s your total AO3 word count?
231k
Your Top 5 stories by kudos?
As I only have six seven stories, the odd ones out are Tines of the Devil’s Fork, that drabble chain no one much cared for, and Lucid Hours, Inverted Nightmares, maybe because I posted it after the fandom had started winding down
Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
I try to reply to every comment I get, since I think it’s encouraging‍ ‍‍—‍ I certainly lose steam commenting if I don’t know if the author cares for it.
Do you write crossovers?
Corrupt Combustion might count as a JJK crossover in some sense, but I’m only really interested in fusions. In most regards I view crossovers as an unserious endeavor incompatible with my suspension of disbelief & investment in a fictional reality.
Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
I’ve never posted anything technically explicit, but at a certain point my sensual descriptions of maiming and blood drinking might as well be smut. (I have written some smuttier stuff, but it’s all short and pretty hard to find.)
Have you ever had a fic stolen?
closest I’ve come is a fic that was briefly titled the same as mine before I talked to the author about it
Have you ever had a fic translated?
not yet
Have you ever co‍-written a fic before?
not yet
What’s your all time favorite ship?
J/Uzi, was there ever any doubt?
What’s a WIP that you want to finish but probably never will?
Corrupt Combustion I think. evil answer would be Hostile Takeover, but never is a long time and HT is ironically less ambitious.
What are your writing strengths?
prose and dialgoue. I like to think I have a way with worldbuilding and plotting, and some agree, but I’m largely potential man in that department. When I first started answering this, I would have said my ability to spit out thousands of words of rogue draft at the slightest prompting, but sic transit gloria mundi.
What are your writing weaknesses?
when I mentioned this on FBV’s server, someone say I should go: “My weakness is that I care about tag games so much I spend too long perfecting my answer” which is probably a fair cop‍ ‍‍—‍ I have a awful streak of perfectionism. another failing of mine is that I don’t value clarity, and perhaps put too much stock in subtext and technicality, and consequently my writing is simultaneously littered with jargon and attempted poetics but the most long standing problem is that my stories can be awfully slow paced.
What’s a fandom/ship you haven’t written for yet, but want to?
for ships, I mean to say Juzimily or JuziV, but have put some effort into writing them. better answer might be purple malice (Nori/Alice). for fandoms, torn between hollow knight, pokemon, and feng shui engineering.
What’s your favorite fic that you’ve written?
probably Even in Debt‍ ‍‍—‍ Dreams, just on grounds of having a vision and just flat out achieving it.
i feel weird tagging anyone this soon after my last tag game, and the fact that i’m just clearing my drafts here
2026‍-01‍-07

re: previous reblog, i was going to put this in the tags but it ran a bit long and is probably inappropriate on a meaningful post

but basically the setting i’ve been working on has a species of intelligent spider that has a sort of domestication/mutualism relation with a species of moth.

the relevant bit is that the spiders’ sexual dimorphism and gender ratio is so extreme that males are diminutive and uncommon, and do not advance beyond the rudimentary level of development necessary for mating nor do they survive the act

thus: to the spiders he/him pronouns would connote a status as pet or farm animal

the moths meanwhile inherit their culture and values from the spiders’ hegemony. so male moths are she/her and present feminine since that’s synonymous with personhood. and the propagation of feminizing wolbachia infections means that being physiologically male may as well be an immature life stageo

2026‍-01‍-14

i wonder if there is much mileage to get out of a concept of an isolated demand for disbelief

this is a common failure mode of “bad on purpose” storytelling, where a certain development in a narrative serves to almost explicitly say to the audience, “wait, did you actually believe what you were told? didn’t you realize how ridiculous it sounded? be serious.”

this feels clever, but it’s pretty risky. because if you truly accept the suggestion of “don’t believe ridiculous things”, then most stories vanish in a puff of logic

be careful inviting scrutiny you can’t withstand

2026‍-01‍-14
few things are quite as dispiriting as hating someone who is Fine. there will never be a cathartic confrontation. there will never be an excuse to rant about how you never liked them. they will never be anything less than a stray thorn in the embrace of the friend group, beloved by everyone except for you, and anyone who would also hate them is probably insufferable in their own right. you can do nothing except sit powerless and cherish the moments you can forget they exist

by all means, decide this site isn’t worth it. plenty of reasons‍ ‍‍—‍ the transphobic moderation, the insultingly inconsistent mature content policy. it’s hardly worth defending, and maybe you just don’t vibe with it‍ ‍‍—‍ if you’re leaving for bluesky, you probably don’t actually want a blogging platform

but the way these artists engage with it (it’s the same story every time) how can you not cringe at the unforced blundering? their blogs are just a stream of their own posts, with maybe a reblog promoting a friend’s fundraiser here and there.

real sorry that dumping art every few weeks didn’t succeed in prompting a community to spring up fully formed on this, the reblogging posts and engaging with mutuals website

it always annoys me when people talk about “shortening attention spans” as if it’s a real and meaningful thing.

once you learn that the origin of the concept was advertisement research by companies concerned that people were learning to ignore their ads, you become terribly aware of how little grounding in citation these conversations have.

every day someone will offhandedly remark on our ever‍-shortening attention span, but do they know that? or do they just assume it since it’s obviously happening and all the regurgitated popsci communications they’ve been exposed to corroborates the framing?

when you think about it, the hyperstitional nature of hypnosis’s effectiveness makes it tantamount to rederiving fucking from first principles. thus, hypokink is free software while conventional sex relies on proprietary blobs.

You know I end having to look up the definitions for a lot of words on your posts (this isn’t an insult, I like learning new words), that being said, I still don’t know what this means.

it’s a high context joke, admittedly. there’s two pieces of info you need to understand.

the first is that the popular idea that hypnosis doesn’t work and can’t make you do anything you don’t want to do is mostly right but misses the point. there’s a great post that illustrates this point in more detail (i’ll reblog it if i can find it), i can’t match its cogency here, certainly not when it’s tomorrow in the morning and i’m tired.

but reductively, i would summarize it as hypnosis derives its power from belief in hypnosis. relatedly, suggestibility itself needs to be trained; it takes some practice to properly enter the trance state and give in to the effect.

the second is understanding the philosophy of free software. “open source” is related, but another term that sees use is libre, which might be clearest for our purposes. this is is a movement that insists the source code of programs should be freely available to read, modify, and distribute.

imagine if a restaurant had a special menu that showed the ingredients and recipe for every meal they served. this would be a libre meal. now imagine someone who refuses to eat anything unless they knew exactly what’s in it and how it’s prepared. that’s akin to a principled proponent of free software, who would prefer every program that runs on their computer be open. linux, for example, is largely libre

the thing is, a lot of companies refuse to make their software open. there are programs that are essential to having a functioning computer‍ ‍‍—‍ e.g. hardware drivers, or the codecs for decoding audio and video‍ ‍‍—‍ which are not open. so what happens in practice is that you’ll have most of the code be open, but in certain places it’ll have to interface with a opaque “blob” of propriety machine code. you have no idea what it really does, but the whole thing falls apart without it.

finally, these two ideas come together in the post. phrase by phrase:

the hyperstitional nature of hypnosis’s effectiveness

hypnosis is a hyperstition; it’s made real through people’s belief in it

makes it tantamount to rederiving fucking from first principles

hypnosis entails a level of intimacy comparable to if not exceeding actual intercourse

and is that not more impressive? sex has been evolving for millions, billions of years; hypnosis is a extraordinarily recent cultural development by comparison

imagine if you showed some whiz kid the quadratic formula, then asked them if it always finds the roots, and after they spend a while thinking, they give you a proof. now, we already knew about the quadratic formula, but what’s impressive is this kid doing it from first principles, independently

thus, hypokink is free software

the fact the hypnosis is a cultural phenomena means that it’s the product of human ingenuity. you can explain what’s happening; we built it ourselves. this makes it in some sense analogous to free software

the metaphor isn’t exact‍ ‍‍—‍ part of the humor here is that it’s a ridiculous leap of logic to make. but still, there’s almost a thread of sense to it, and that’s funny

while conventional sex relies on proprietary blobs.

contrast this to sex. there’s a lot about sex that’s culturally (and therefore metaphorically) open‍ ‍‍—‍ dirty talk, roleplay, which things you wear to look sexy and what toys you use.

but why do we get aroused? why do our body parts eject fluid? you have no real control over these things, and any understanding of how they work has to be reverse engineered. therefore, it’s kind of analogous to proprietary blobs of code

corollary: the only ethical form of reproduction

this ties back into the discussion of free software philosophy; many hold that position that free software isn’t just practically better or preferable, but using and advocating for it is a moral good outright, and proprietary software is wrong

mindbreak identity death + twinning

a lot of hypnosis‍-adjacent kinks (e.g. dronification) concern themselves with the suppression and inhibition of a sense of identity, and kink fiction (especially stories feature mind control, pet play, etc.) often take this to an extreme, where characters will undergo total erasure of identity and be left a mind‍-broken shell of their former self

it’s difficult to confirm that my usage of twinning here is idiomatic‍ ‍‍—‍ i picked it up from a girl i dated, and two of my paramours through her were a pretty dramatic example of twinning. they matched avatars, adopted similar names, etc. (their similarity grew famous enough that there was a briefly a trend in a chatroom for everyone to adopt a variant of their name; people would say with good‍-natured exasperation that they kept multiplying)

so what i’m describing here is not something that really has an established tag or keyword that i know of. but imagine hypnotizing someone with the goal of eroding their mind entirely and supplanting it with a mimicry of your own identity.

success at this would turn your victim into a copy of yourself‍ ‍‍—‍ and this is a form of reproduction. you become a parasite or mind virus or predatory idea, devouring and corrupting all the obedient humans who fall prey to you

and given that the alternative is indulging the closed source biological code… clearly this is much less dangerous and far more principled!

this extreme is unnecessary. even accepting the above hypotheses, introjection is just as ethical. no need to completely reinstall the OS when you can dual boot or run virtual machines

an interesting writing game occurred to me: ranked, competitive telephone

basically, you start with a passage. the passage gets read to each writer in the chain. ideally this is done with longer passages than typical telephone games, so maybe they are recorded, or maybe you have an assistant who reads out the text

and since they can run long, the writers will have the option to hear it more than once. probably they shouldn’t hear it after they start writing, though.

anyway, the writer’s goal is to faithfully retell the story they just heard, right? but by design, they’re going to fail. which is where the ranking comes in

now, it’s subjective to really judge how similar any two retellings are, so probably you’d want to design a rubric that assigns points to meeting different criteria. e.g., points for stretches of words repeated verbatim, points for elements in common even if jumbled or rephrased, points for thematic similarity, etc. this is your accuracy score

here’s where things get fun: where you err or embellish the original story, you get points each time that element scores accuracy points for another writer. (as long as the chain is unbroken, no copyright shenanigans. if someone down the chain thinks of the same thing, you dont get credit.) this is your innovation score

your final score is accuracy x innovation

and, to keep things balanced, the game happens in at least two rounds; the first time you get to the end of the chain, the final writer composes a sequel story, which then goes down the chain the other way

so naturally, the ideal strategy is to preserve every bit of wording from the original, then interleave your own elements in for extra points. (note that you get no points if your story bears no resemblance to what you heard, or makes no changes)

but if you strategically factor in the fallibility of other writers, then you’d really want to trim down to only the elements that make for the most compelling and memorable story.

i wonder what would result

to me there’s always been something uniquely evocative about yellow grass and dead fallen leaves poking out through a layer of white. ice and snow can so easily render a landscape majestic, even otherworldly. but the sight of grass poking through is ugly, mundane. i suppose there’s an innate contradiction to it, the very sight implies its impermanence. the snow must be fleeting when what’s buried beneath still grasps out

and then you see her again. it’s been a while, she’s different now. all the frostiness in her is gone. she’s just lying there, soft and filthy with grime. reduced to a dripping puddle underfoot. and you’re in public. it’s embarrassing
