interesting pattern i’ve noticed when structuring paragraphs. sometimes continuing a line of thinking into a second paragraph will actually result in three paragraphs.
e.g. i might have one big paragraph which touches on ideas A and B, and this feels ok, but then i realize i have more to say about B, but extending it further would make the paragraph too long, so i insert a new paragraph
so we briefly have (A + B1) (B2). but when i see this pattern, i split the first paragraph, even though it was fine before
something about an extended discussion starting in the middle of a different paragraph bugs me.

teleporter and mind upload arguments are already insufferable to us, where it’s just a thought experiment and we’re free to imagine that somehow the procedures are infinitely reliable.
but any real technology sucks at first. consider what sound was like back when there was just crackling 78s shellac records and no vinyl yet. it took a while to figure out (or care about) high fidelity
if a mostly-accurate and usable brain scanning procedure were developed, refining it could still take years if not decades. imagine the smugness of a generation that grows up knowing copies are as obviously inferior to “the real thing” as self-degrading cassette tape. and then you have to argue that no, digital copies really do replicate losslessly beyond the threshold of perception now

- 2026-07-13
the paradox of clarification is that, assuming good faith, it is almost always a mistake to say “what did you mean by that” or “i don’t understand” or “explain better” or “?”
at least if you’re talking to someone who puts any thought into the things they say (i do.) the simple fact of the matter is that i chose the things i post to convey my intent, and i chose what i think best says what i mean and doesn’t say what i don’t mean.
if that doesn’t work for you, that sucks. but if i had a good answer to “what did you mean by that”, why wouldn’t i have just said that in the first place? i didn’t know what you’d have trouble understanding, or i would have said it another way, and knowing you don’t understand still doesn’t actually tell me that
at this point, i increasing just ignore people who ask me to explain, because they don’t get that i don’t understand their lack of understanding any more than they understand me. “please explain” is asking me to read your mind. tell me what you don’t understand. ask a specific question.
otherwise the only appropriate response to “?” is to paste the same post back at them.

- i wanted to design a ttrpg where you play as a spider and i had some neat mechanical ideas but organizing them kicked my ass. maybe it’s doomed
the basic concept was that one player would play as nature (the gm) and the others would play as spiders
nature’s goal is to design an ecosystem, which mechanically means assigning a list of traits to (unseen) animal cards
the spider would then invest resources in building webs and assigning traits to them
and then nature tells the spiders if their webs catch anything
and then the spider has to decide if it’s worth going for the kill, etc.
the thing that made me :joonMindfuck: was that it’s so easy to get lost in the sauce deciding how broad a menu of traits to design, whether to model things like silk and hp and if you should use a map to track where webs are placed
but core ‘fun’ of the game is that you’re essentially trying to deduce the distribution of r/p/s on nature’s pre-built ecosystem and design a web that catches the prey that gives the most points
The major properties a web can have is being cryptic, sticky, or trapped. Which property is best depends on what prey you hope to catch.
- Cryptic webs easily catch keen prey, but allow sly prey to escape.
- Sticky webs easily catch sly prey, but allow tough prey to fight back.
- Trapped webs easily catch tough prey, but allow keen prey to avoid.
actually thinking about this again, the hidden information element could be fun to emphasize
nature isn’t allowed to talk about traits or stats, so you’d get environmental descriptions and try to guess from the prose, ok does it seem like this implies tough prey would live here
and then some weird bug shows up in your web and you’re poking it like are u keen. are u sly
and then it bites u

entiotic enthrallment means forceful assimilation into a hivemind and eusocialization into a subordinate and dependent caste.
i dislike how much mental gynmnasticism i’m exercising in convincing myself that this is not necessarily a form of slavery.
i don’t like slavery (shockingly), and i’m pretty uncomfortable with the possibility that i’m recapitulating or reinventing slavery apologetics. the very idea sours my interest in the concept
but i think there’s a meaningful nuance? maybe i can assuage my doubts by comparing it to employment, which is coercive and unethical but ultimately just not the same thing.
What the fuck is entiotic enthrallment
This sounds like a blue enchantment from 2007chrylurks sustain themselves on mortal souls, predominately by breaking it down and extracting it through the blood. mortals are optimized and adapted to this process using drugs and surgery, mainly involving chrylurk venom, infestation of parasitic larva, and various applications of their silk.
Elaborate on that, please
there isn’t much to elaborate on really, since this doesn’t amount to much more than word games. ultimately forced labor and violations of bodily autonomy are inseparable from the concept
but it has bothered me that i don’t really have a rebuttal to the thought in my head that goes “so thralls are just slaves, right. this is just kinking on slavery”
i guess the best angle for drawing a delineation is that this is the obverse of how the existence of queens doesn’t make chrylurk hives a monarchy
the existence of thralls doesn’t make chrylurks into slavers, because thralls are a necessary component of the eusocial organization, and the ideal of a healthy hivemind is for engrams to be freely shared in and allocated for the optimal flourishing of all hivelings
goofus looks at the fact that it’s impossible to revoke consent or opt out of being a thrall and concludes they are held against their will and brainwashed into subservience.
gallant looks and sees that if you didn’t want to be a thrall, then those thoughts would be extracted and grafted into a drone more suitable to house them. what eventually remains is thus selected for accordance

once again the curse of “hard scifi is more fun than fantasy magic” has struck
last month: chrylurk psychology is Like That because their minds are crystallized and they use alchemy to fork off several copies of their brain activity to run in parallel
today: chrylurks have mutant neural anatomy and physiology, granting them a second order nervous system and new brain structure called the xenocortex, optimized for hyper-learning
what is hyperlearning
neural eval(), basically
hyperlearning is the ability to look at a schematic of a circuit, visualize it in your mind palace, and thereby repotentiate the synatic weights of some neurons to natively execute it
it’s a behavior that could only arise with the advent of a eusocial society, because deception is one thing, but being able to whisper power word: aneurysm to someone you don’t like is basically a nonstarter for selfish agents
but once you have trusted inputs, you go from the indirections of symbolic language to a format that distills and transmits raw cognition
despite the name, hyperlearning is not really “learning… 2!” because hyperlearning would give you a knife, pliers, and a screwdriver; natural learning would give you a multitool.
the type of circuits that are easiest to (correctly) compose and inscribe tend to be single use, whereas learned behaviors tend to be efficiently compressed into circuits overlapping with other behaviors
there’s also some unavoidable inefficiency, bc while you can trust your sisters not to smack you with a malicious cognition, they’ll still fuck up sometimes. rice’s theorem and all that.
which is where the “xenocortex” comes in. it’s where foreign cognition is executed in a vaguely sandboxed way.
probably dooming the dream of downloading bug kung fu or something unfortunately.
but it tends to be pretty fruitful to install a hyperlearned behavior, and use that to accelerate the regular learning of it. especially when, due to the function of the xenocortex, you can effectively just turn the hyperlearned knowledge on and off to see what you’re missing.
“hyperlearning” in the sense of rapid prompted repotentiation can occur outside of the xenocortex, though. the main scenario being when queen pheromones trigger the cascade of neurotransmitters preparing a bug for unraveling and recapitulation

from time to time, you’ll see a poster rant about their frustrations with a medium (be it games, fics, video essays, whatever). they gripe about a constellation of vague yet consistent failing that they keep encountering over and over. maddening! you’d think they’re this close to giving up on the medium entirely
and then at the end of it all, they ask for recommendations for anything that avoids doing the thing they hate.
almost as a rule, i ignore and refuse to answer these posters. why would i bother? especially when the things they complain about are barely articulated and subjective, the only information i’m given is that there are wrong answers here — answers wrong enough to inspire a rant! so even if there’s something i’d like to strongly recommend, how can i be sure it’s not guilty of the same crimes of annoyance?
if there’s a mistake prevalent enough to be tendency, then people aren’t going to be as good at discerning it as the sensitive. and if one complains louder than one praises, i just don’t find the prospect of giving a recommendation very rewarding

- GLITCH posted
- Hostile takeovers never looked this good
much as it would please me to be referenced, i don’t think it’s strange at all. “hostile takeover” is an established term. and it’s so commonly used that, for example, trying to search for mention of the fic on twitter or any other site is a hopeless endeavor. in fact, it’s so natural a choice that the fic now known as “executive dismissal” was originally called hostile takeover before my friends noticed and we let the author know it’d be confusing.
the odds of it being a reference (or even just that someone at glitch is aware of my fic) is not zero, and objectively this post is (very slight) evidence for it. but it’s circumstantial evidence, so i wouldn’t bet on this not being a coincidence

popular culture latched onto the image of mantes and spiders are femme fatales prone to sexual cannibalism. half the time when you see art of bug girls in a romantic or suggestive context, if the joke isn’t made directly, you’ll get someone in the comments making a crack about it
with most bits of pop wisdom, it’s inaccurate. statistically, males can survive copulation, and of course they can. if it made sense to always kill your mate, it wouldn’t be surprising because every species would evolve to do it
but if there’s one thing our culture loves more the touting fun fics, it’s getting to outsmart the fun facts and go actually, did you know sexual cannibalism is incredibly rare? it only happens in captivity. it only happens when they’re starving.
the irony of course is that this is also pop wisdom. Mantodea and Araneae are entire orders, there are thousands of species of both. it’s a fool’s errand to think you can make sweeping generalizations about a trait so closely contingent on the specific niche and life history an animal adapted to fill.
does it really seem like this is some dial with setting that’s best for every kind of spider and mantis across the whole globe? sexual cannibalism is rare in some species, and more common in others.
but just so this post isn’t a no-fun “it’s complicated” deflation, i will leave you with a fun fact.
specifically, i’ll point out the springbok mantis. these have your classic mantis look, bright green shells and little triangle heads. nymphs hatch out of their big ootheca group egg one at a time, because even as babies they are very cannibalistic. the nymphs eat each other even when there are other prey. (source)
which probably clues you in to the relevance: they’re sexual cannibals, too. the figure i encountered was that 60% of encounters between females and males end in cannibalism, sometimes without even mating. (source)
this starts to make a bit more sense when i note that the females are capable of parthenogenesis. the girls get away with being so ridiculously aggressive because they can just reproduce asexually.
i’m not an expert, but i thought that was pretty neat. you can learn some interesting stuff when you take a moment to check before repeating what you’ve heard?

- opening a book from 2012 and do we perhaps think there may be some other things worth noting about phrenology. do we perhaps want to apply a descriptor other than “researchers have confirmed this idea”
Phrenologists explained mental differences as arising from variations in the sizes of the brain and its regions. By imaging the brains of many human subjects, modern researchers have confirmed this idea, using it to explain differences in intelligence as well as mental disorders like autism and schizophrenia. They have found some of the strongest evidence we have for the idea that minds differ because brains differ. The evidence is statistical, however—revealed only by averages over populations. The sizes of the brain and its regions remain almost useless for predicting the mental properties of an individual.
